During the evening of March 6, Hayden Police officers responded to a call at the Giant Gas Station in Winkelman. The call indicated that a male subject was damaging vehicles with his hands and his head. Hayden Police investigated the matter and determined that the suspect was Vianes Casias Jr.
According to Hayden Police, Casias resisted arrest and fled the scene. Hayden Police called for backup; Kearny Police responded to the call and assisted with apprehending Casias on Highway 177 between Winkelman and Hayden. The pursuit ensued on foot and that is when Hayden Police Officer Robert Youdelman along with a Kearny Police officer were struck by a car. Officer Youdelman was treated on the scene and released. The Kearny Police Officer, who wishes to not have his name released, was airlifted to a Tucson hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and remains the hospital in serious but stable condition. He does thank everyone for their love, support and prayers.
The suspect Vianes Casias Jr. was arrested at his mother’s home and was booked into the Gila County Jail. He was charged with disorderedly conduct and criminal damage, which were the charges before the pursuit. He has also been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a Peace Officer, resisting arrest and escape. He remains in custody with a $250,000 cash only bond. His next hearing dates have not been set yet.
David Savinen, 56, Kearny, was the driver of the vehicle that hit the officers. He was charged with with giving false information to police officers and driving on a suspended license. Impairment was not a factor in the incident.
