The wild monsoon storms that hit Superior and the Copper Corridor region on Friday and Saturday created quite the mess throughout Superior and damaged the picnic areas and some trails at the Wallace Desert Garden at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.
One storm hit on Friday night which caused the Town to close the Queen Creek wash crossings. That storm sent tons of debris straight into the Arboretum via Queen Creek and the Silver King wash, building up a wall of debris along the Wallace Garden bridge. A second torrential storm hit the area on Saturday afternoon, during the Prickly Pear festival, sending event goers and visitors to Superior for shelter and dry cover.
More storms are predicted throughout the week. Residents are asked to please not go around high water crossing barriers. Sand bags are available at Town Hall for those that need them.
Crews are working as quickly as possible to clear the debris from the streets. The Arboretum is also looking for volunteers to help with clean up and debris removals. You can contact them directly at 520-689-2723 for more information on volunteering for the clean up efforts at the garden.
