Ray Unified Governing Board held board meetings on Aug. 22 and Aug. 28.

During the meetings, a majority of the action items were discussed in executive sessions (secret), which included discussions on staffing adjustments and new responsibilities.  Meeting minutes show that the board directed staff to do as directed in Executive Session.  This is not an uncommon activity for a public elected body and public service employees as a certain amount of privacy is allowed.

The action items discussed and approved pertained to:

  • Melissa Huerta – Assignments and Compensation
  • Joe Fürstenberg – Appointment, Assignments and Compensation – Approve a contract
  • Retention of Donna Roach Contract
  • Discussion and possible action regarding update of Administration and Department Directors Salary Schedule
  • Discussion and possible action regarding the administrative organization and position.

The board also discussed in open session to hire an Elementary Principal and Junior Senior High School principal, and also hire a part time superintendent.  The board discussed the interview process and other administrative organizational chart.  The board did not vote officially on the hiring of the principal positions but the minutes indicated that the board will be developing the full plan and application and interview process.

Another topic of discussion from the Aug. 22 meeting was a request to discuss options for hosting Seminary (LDS) classes for students.  The board discussed a variety of options, and reviewed school policy, which does not allow for regular school schedule to be impacted by seminary classes and the policy does not allow for seminary classes to be held on school property.  The Board ultimately tabled action on this item.

The board also voted on signature approvals until a new superintendent is hired.  Principal Melissa Huerta and Business Manager Holly Acuna are authorized to sign official documents.  If a superintendent signature is required, Board President Jay Wernett will sign and should a Board President signature be required, Board member Tino Flores will sign.  This signature authority is being approved until a new superintendent is hired.

Many of these actions have been required after the sudden and unexpected resignation of former Superintendent Anthony Morrison.
