Carlos Armendariz

Carlos Armendariz is the new Ray High School Principal and Athletic Director.

He grew up in the small town of San Luis, Arizona near Yuma. After high school he attended the University of Arizona. This year he will be starting his 35th year in public education, 14 of those years as an administrator including time in the Tucson Unified School District.

Armendariz has goals and plans for the district.

“I would like to offer our students a variety of educational opportunities,” he said. “This year we are offering our students a range of online, elective courses, such as artificial intelligence, introduction to veterinary science, creative writing and photography. It’s our attempt to provide students with options available to students in larger communities. We realize student’s choices, so we are trying to make Ray Junior and Senior a very viable and attractive choice.”

The junior high students will also see some changes.

“We are also offering Spanish and career exploration to junior high students,” Armendariz explained. “Ultimately we are trying to prepare students for work, the military or college.”

He also wants to attract students who may have left the district for different programs. High school dropouts, too, he plans to target, although he’s unsure of how many students have dropped out in the past couple of years.

“We will be reaching out to students who have dropped out of school and trying to provide them with options. We will look at their age and number of credits earned and determine if we can provide them a viable educational plan.”
