Wayne Newman takes Atlantic-Sun Conference title

Wayne Newman took home first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95 seconds, setting the Lipscomb University record and the Atlantic-Sun record in the process on March 1, 2015 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “Newman had a terrific 60-meter hurdles,” head Coach Taylor said. “He defended his Atlantic-Sun title from 2014 and set the Atlantic Sun Conference record and the Lipscomb school record in the process. That was definitely a highlight at the meet. He came back, literally 10 minutes later, to finish fourth in the 400m with a time of 50.70”.

At the same conference, Wayne participated in the 4×400-meter relay with his team mates Brian Gentry, Nelson Scott and Kenny Smith. “The men wrapped up the meet with a nice third place finish in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 3:22.75 to earn All-Conference honors,” Coach Taylor said.

The 2015 Track and Field competition was Wayne’s second year of participating in indoor events. In the 2014 Track and Field competition, Wayne and his teammates ran the distance medley relay and placed first at the Emory Crossplex Invitational with a time of 10:19.93. Wayne placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.19 and finished second at the Southern Illinois University Invitational in the 400 meters (51.06). At the Atlantic-Sun Championships, 2014, Wayne won the 60-meter hurdles championship with a personal-best time of 8.07 also breaking the indoor Lipscomb school record. He then recorded personal bests in the 400 meters (50.64), 500 meters (1:06.72) and the 600 meters (1:25.05).

Wayne currently attends Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. and is majoring in nursing. He is from San Manuel, Ariz. While in high school, Wayne participated in the track and field competition while attending San Manuel Senior High School. The following were some of his recognitions: named Academic All-American by National High School Coach’s Association; named to All-State First Team in the 110 meter hurdles in 2012-13; named to All-State First Team in the 300 meter hurdles in 2013 as well as All-State Second Team in the 300 meter hurdles and the All-State Second Team in the long jump in 2013. Wayne was named All-Southern Arizona Athlete of the Year in 2013 and named to All-Southern Arizona First Team in the 110 meter hurdles in 2013. He was the 2A South Region Athlete of the Year selection in 2011 and was a member of the 2012 Arizona Division IV Section II Championship team. Wayne won Arizona State Championships, Division IV in 2013 in the following events: the long jump (22’08’’.25); the 110 meter hurdles (14.52) and the 300 meter hurdles (38.41). In 2012, he won the Arizona State Championships, Division IV in the 110 meter hurdles (14.80) and the 300 meter hurdles (39.79). Wayne lettered all four years of high school in track and field.
