Last week, three citizens of Oracle were awarded the Firewise award for making sure their commercial and residential properties met or exceeded the national fire safety code.
The first two people awarded were Lou and Dee Moore for making sure their property was up kept. They were also applauded for having such an up-to-code property, that it would even help maintain safety for their neighbors.
The third person was Alicia Bristow who accepted the award on behalf of the Visitor’s Center for the town of Oracle.
Brian Kirkpatrick presented the awards.
Larry Southard, the Fire Chief for the Oracle Fire Department, said the Firewise staff tried to give out these awards every year, but there were some years they skipped. He also said that the winners of this year’s Firewise award were decided and voted on during the July Fire District meeting.
Southard said the Firewise board members bring suggestions as to who should be awarded these awards.
According to the Oracle Fire website, there are a few things that you can do to keep your property firewise:
- Cut down all the high grass;
• Remove dead shrubbery and leaves; and
• Make a perimeter around your property to prevent the spread of fire.
