Kearny General Plan approved, water secured

The Kearny Town Council held its April meeting and approved repairs to water Well #8 and the Town General plan.  Both agenda items play a critical role in planning for Kearny’s future.

For 12 years, Well #8 has not been in operation due to various mechanical issues.  Despite numerous engineering plans the wells never worked efficiently for the Town.  In the recent years with the drought in Arizona becoming more and more severe, the use of Globe Equity Water District water has been declining. The Town has been ordered to find a permanent solution to managing its water needs and told that it can no longer purchase water to accommodate the needs of the community.

The cost of the repairs to Well #8 will be $62,576.48, the work will be completed by Saguaro Well and Pump out of Vail, Arizona.   Initial testing of the well has proved that the well can produce 74 gallons per minute and with the repairs the well will be able to produce 125 gallons per minute which will provide the Town of Kearny with a permanent water solution.

The Council also voted to approve the General Plan for Kearny.  The plan will be in effect through 2035 when it will have to be renewed again.  General Plans are required by State Law.  Central Arizona Governments managed the public participation and the data gathering for the plan.  In addition to covering the basic land use and transportation planning, local leaders added an economic development component to the plan.  Some of the suggested economic strategies for the town included working regionally with other communities, developing more trails and promoting the Town as a retirement destination.

In other business the council accepted the resignation of Chris Postel from the Library Board, adopted a resolution for Fair Housing Month and also approved the emergency replacement of a motor and pump for the Waste Water Treatment Plant.
