By Sam Hosler, Mayor, Town of Kearny

Harry Grizzle, the Deputy Chief for Law Enforcement in the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, will begin as Interim Chief for the four towns of Kearny, Hayden, Mammoth, and Winkelman.  He has been in law enforcement since he was 20 years old, and has held every rank in all Bureaus of the Sheriff’s Office. He is a holder of the Medal of Valor, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

He has volunteered to serve in our midst up to 90 days, and Pinal County will cover his salary. Meanwhile, the Task Force to recommend a regional police force will continue its work with a meeting on Monday, May 16. Deputy Chief Grizzle will start work the middle of May. Let’s all be sure to greet him warmly.

I remember this time last year, when the Rotary Club stepped up to organize the benefit auction and steak fry for our town pool, which had closed because of its deteriorating condition. It was a magical night, and Bill Dunn delighted everyone with his humor and auctioneering skills. Well, this Saturday, May 14, from 5-7 p.m. at the General Kearny Inn, the community auction and steak fry for the pool is making its return, with all proceeds going toward the town pool. The Rotary Club is seeking the donation of items for the auction The call is out for donated items to be auctioned off. Simply bring your donation to the General Kearny Inn, preferably by this Friday, May 13.

The pool is restored and ready for a full season. The pool surface and all its innards have been refinished or replaced, and the pool is also ADA (American Disability Association) compliant. Last summer without a pool was a very long summer for our families. It will be good to have our wonderful pool back in sparkling condition.

Many people have asked me about getting a new recycling operation. Pinal County has willingly worked with us and we will have a new facility. The county has asked that it be in an enclosed yard, so our delay lies in acquiring the materials and putting up a new fence. Rest assured, for it is coming! I barely can wait myself, because my back yard is filled with cardboard and bottles.

Remember that this Tuesday, May 17, is election day. I especially ask you to study up on Proposition 123, which is the blockbuster funding for our Arizona school system. Let your vote be counted and your voice be heard!
