Granddaughter of Superior couple earns first team honors with teammates

  The Lowry High School girls golf team will head into next week’s state tournament on a high note after shooting its best rounds of the year to conclude the regular season in the Northern 3A.

  The Lady Bucks were in Carson this past Monday to play Eagle Valley Golf Course in a tournament hosted by Truckee High School.

  Lowry shot it’s best score of the year at 361 and finished second  to Elko, who fired a 351. Spring Creek was a distant third at 404 and Fernley (435) and Truckee (461) rounded out the top five.

  Elko’s Chalee Mullin was the low medalist with a round of 84 and Lowry’s Brooklyn Backus shot her best score of the year at 85 to finish second overall. Elko’s Annika Criss (86) was third.

  Senior’s Hannah Havens and Kaity Sample shot career best rounds at 88 and 95 and sophomore Tatyana Carlson shot a 93. Elise Rose (101) and Savanna Cox (104) rounded out the scores for Lowry.

  The Northern 3A closed out the regular season on Tuesday in Fernley. Elko won the tournament at 359 and Lowry was second at 370. Spring Creek (432) was third.

  Carlson finished the season out on a high note as the low medalist with a round of 82. Criss (84) and Mullin (86) both from Elko were second and third, respectively.

  Backus shot a 94 for the Lady Bucks, while Rose shot a season best 95 and Sample finished with a 99. Cox carded a 101 and Havens 102 for the Lady Bucks.

  All six Lowry players were named to either the first or second all-league teams.

  Criss was named the Player of the Year and was joined by teammates Ciara Peters, Shelby Mullin and Chalee Mullin on the first team. Carlson, Backus and Sample were named to the all-league, first team as well.

  Havens, Cox and Rose were named to the second team as were Spring Creek’s Aintzane Alt and Elise Thiessen and Elko’s Sarah Sarbacker.

Elko won the Northern 3A with 48 points, while Lowry (43) was second and Spring Creek (35) third. All three teams will play in the NIAA 3A State Championships at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko on Monday and Tuesday.

  Tatyana is the granddaughter of Nacho “Mac” and Dora Villaverde and the daughter of Anna Villaverde Carlson.
