Voters have a decision to make in August. Who will be mayor? Who will be elected to the Superior Council?
Voters in Superior will have several candidates to chose from in the upcoming Town Council election and Mayoral recall election slated for Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016.
Incumbents Vice Mayor Olga Lopez and Councilmember John Tameron will seek re-election to their open seats. Bruce Armitage, Vanessa Navarrette and Bill Vogler have each tossed their names into the contest and will campaign for one of the three open seats along with the incumbents.
A recall election has also been scheduled for the Aug. 30 ballot, Councilmember Mila Besich-Lira has announced her candidacy to run in the recall to unseat current Mayor Jayme Valenzuela. She will not seek re-election to her council seat. The recall election was petitioned by local residents following the allegations of the misuse of public funds by Mayor Valenzuela. Should Besich-Lira unseat the Mayor, she will fulfill the remaining time on his term which ends in December of 2018. Valenzuela is currently under investigation by the Arizona Attorney Generals office regarding the allegations.
