On Oct. 31, 2014 the first grade children of First Avenue Elementary did something amazing. They went trick or treating for the Tri-Community Food Bank. They did not ask for candy but instead for a can of food to help those in need this year. The children dressed up in their Halloween costumes and went door to door around the school collecting food.
Each child was all smiles as they walked around the neighborhood. The families that live around the school participated and the combined effort of this community was 200 cans of food for the Tri-Community Food Bank.
The teachers also used the food collection as a wonderful teaching tool involving the students with the tallying of cans. Each child got to take turns forming “rods” (groups of 10 cans) and once the final number was in, everyone was all smiles.
I want to take a moment to thank not just the children of First Avenue for their community service, but the teachers Mrs. Mansager, and Mrs. Austin, as well as all the families who donated their time and food to help this great cause.
I love the fact that the children were excited to help out those in need, and that our teachers and staff saw a way to allow them the opportunity to help. I am grateful to have been able to witness this act of community service and hope to see it again.
