First Avenue and Mammoth STEM Preschool Classrooms

The spirits of preschool students, from both First Avenue and Mammoth STEM Elementary, are soaring after the treat of a field trip to our local San Manuel airport on Friday, March 12. Students were so excited to experience this hands-on field trip right here in the community, citing it as one of the best field trips they had ever been on.

Ms. Shawnie Tinsley stated,“This field trip was planned to go along with our project based learning. Students chose to investigate airplanes. We are so fortunate to have the airport welcome us!”

Parrish Traweek set up the hangars, so that the kids could explore five different types of airplanes, inside and out, as well as record data, take and draw pictures, and ask questions.

Each student was given the opportunity to sit in the cockpits of the different Cessna airplanes and to operate the controls. Traweek and his staff also explained to students how the airport works and introduced our youngest learners to the diversity of careers available in aviation.

The students ended the day by watching a flight demonstration, with two teachers taking off into the sky with a pilot. Students will continue to investigate and explore airplanes as part of an ongoing project.
