A favorite part of the Holidays in Superior Arizona

Christmas and New Years are great times to remember the past, reflect on what has happened.

The Superior Sun had a chance to ask two ladies from Superior what were their favorite memories of the season.

Barbara Pope

When Barbara Pope was nine years old her family drove through Superior, Arizona on the way to Disneyland. The town made quite an impression on young Barbara, she never forgot it. Ten years ago, she moved to Superior. One of Barbara’s favorite part of the holidays in Superior is the annual party for the Seniors put on by the St. Francis of Assisi Parish.  The event is held by the Catholic Youth Ministry, the Superior high school kids.

Barbara says, ‘’You start feeling down, that there is not much good in the world, but then when you go there and you see the kids they are so enthused and happy about helping other people and that makes you feel good.” The church decorates the hall and has a holiday meal. They also have a gift for each Senior who attends.  Barbara enjoys interacting with the kids. She says, “It’s nice to see that the kids are learning manners, and helping other people besides themselves.”

Corina Martinez

Corina Martinez has lived in Superior for 64 years. Corina says, “I love my superior.”  She loves the Senior Center and goes to it every day. At 82-years-young Corina loves to stay active. She helps take care of the thrift store and helps out with bingo.

During the holidays, one of her favorite things in Superior is watching Santa Claus coming to town. She loves the Fire Department Santa Eve drive, when Santa makes his way around town sitting on the back of a fire truck decorated with thousands of Christmas lights.

Corina spends the holidays with her family and her holidays are filled with tamales, cooking and, she jokes, Bud Light beer.
