Superior – What a busy time of the year for Superior Head Start students and staff! Not to worry! Rest and relaxation is coming soon.
December is the month when they focus on preparing to enjoy family time during the upcoming winter break, which begins on Friday, Dec.19. It’s also the time when the children create something unique and say, “Shh! It’s a secret!”
“We are certain that the parents, grandparents and family members will certainly cherish everything the children make and take home for years to come!” said Teresita Olmos
Currently, the children are participating in a National Head Start anniversary art challenge. In the process, they are learning about color and the technique of filling in space with color. Inspiration comes from recycled magazines, catalogs, books as well as from the Picturing America curriculum photos. They are also enjoying using dots of color known as “pointillism.”
As they learn about art, Head Start students also learn how to take turns while honing their motor skills.
“Dancing has been such a fun activity! The children have enjoyed singing the song “Let It Go” taken from the popular children’s movie “Frozen.” It’s a joy to see them participate in dramatic music and movement. “ said Ms. Olmos.
As part of the month long busy fun, the children participated in a walking field trip to the Superior His & Her Hair Salon on Wednesday, Dec. 3. They toured the hair salon and interacted with Irene, hair stylist and business owner.
The salon has a indoor Christmas reindeer display, which the children enjoyed viewing and commenting on, in eager anticipation of the Town Light Parade, known as “Miracle On Main Street.”
Children commented on what they would tell Santa while sitting on his lap, how long the line might be, who would accompany them and whether they would drink hot cocoa. Many wondered if it would snow.
Now that the year is winding down, so, for a short time, are the activities of Superior Head Start. Even as everyone readies themselves for vacation, there is anticipation in the air, for what activities are waiting the return of students and staff, who will visit and be visited, and, what surprises are in store.
Teresita Olmos stated, “ The Superior Head Start staff would like to thank all of the parents, grandparents, family members, and business and community members of the Town of Superior for all they do to help us in our program! The children need and benefit immensely by your presence!”
