Councilman addresses outgoing mayor’s comments

The Mayor/Manager of Mammoth resigned 7/21/16 at the regular meeting. He claims that four persons on the Council allowed the Town to get in such a mess.

He probably forgot all the letters to the Editor that I wrote firmly protesting against the Town’s spending policies, hiring practices and accountability.

The former Mayor claims that Brewer and Wickham bring only Negative to the table. I tried to make him understand, when I stood up at the meeting on April 21st during Call to the Public and told him, he could not be running the Town like his own personnel business. I thought he could read between the lines and start including the Council in all of his decisions. I guess that is the Negative he is talking about.

Would the Council agree to hire an unlicensed contractor, related to a Town employee? NO. Would the Council agree to bring in an out of state contractor/electrician and pay Room and Board? NO. The contractor was staying where? You guessed it!

Another of his claims is that Brewer and Wickham would not show up to sign checks

(another lapse in memory). He was told that we would not sign anymore of his travel pay checks until he presented them for approval in accounts payable. The former Mayor stated in one of his first meetings that no one would get travel pay without a report to the public. Now you know why he added another check signer without Council approval. The Council gave him approval for check signers when he first started as Mayor. Why didn’t he ask for approval this time?

All through his resignation, he keeps saying, remember this at voting time. Believe me, I hope you do remember that the former Mayor does not want Wickham or Brewer on the Council. He even suggested that we step down so he could continue on. He knows as long as we are on the Council, all things will be above board and open to the Public.

I sincerely apologize to you the Citizens of Mammoth for asking you to vote for him, he completely pulled the wool over my eyes.

The Recall was dumped in my lap and the two that ran were the only ones to step up. I am grateful the Recall took place and we won, or so I thought.

In the beginning all was going great, the former Mayor was asking questions and getting answers on how things had to be done. Well, I guess there were too many hoops and hurdles to do things right and he started doing just what the previous regime did (no reports to the Council and no accountability).

A previous Mayor left a detailed report on what we had to do to turn the Town around, water, garbage, sewer rates etc. We more or less followed that report.

I do not think the combined Towns with one Police Department is going to work. I say no. I know the Town Citizens don’t want it.

One more issue to leave you with a laugh.

I fought hard to get Jones and Sloan on the ballot. I couldn’t get them on the Primary but I did get them on the General Election ballot. Mr. Jones the business man, manager, who is never wrong, couldn’t even get himself on the ballot to run for Supervisor. I know he blamed it on someone else, but being such a wonderful business man, don’t you think that he (personally) would check all the paperwork to see if it was correct before turning it in?

  Thank You,

/s/ Joseph S. Brewer
