Reading is cool

Reading is cool – especially when it’s hot! It’s even more fun when the books are free!

Superior resident Lauren Figdore is partnering with Superior Head Start to host a “Reading is Cool” Book Fair during the Second Friday event on July 14. The Superior Chamber of Commerce is donating space for the event from 4-7 p.m. at its office on Main Street. Hundreds of free gently used books – storybooks, novels and many more – for children from preschool through high school age will be available. There will also be teacher resources and a limited number of titles for adults. Save Money Market is donating bags for readers to take home their new treasures.

“This book giveaway is a great opportunity for parents and their children to have books without having to spend money,” said Hilda Cardenas, Site Manager for the Superior Head Start.

“I’m a big advocate of reading to young children. Reading helps to develop so many skills- vocabulary, creativity, problem-solving, focus and confidence. These skills help set up children for success in school,” she said. “I hope parents take advantage of this free opportunity to build a home library.”

“Reading is such a great thing, both for children and adults,” said Sue Anderson, President of the Superior Chamber of Commerce. “It allows us to use our imaginations and be anywhere or anything we want. The Chamber is happy to open its Main Street office during Second Friday on July 14 for this fantastic FREE distribution of books to children and adults.”

Lauren Figdore has worked in bookstores for many years and has been an avid reader since her own preschool days. “With so many other distractions it is very important to instill a love of reading early on,” she says. “It is something one can enjoy throughout life. I hope these donated books will be enjoyed by their new owners.”
