Along the Gila: Bluegrass Concert and a Benefit at Norm’s

Easter weekend was marked with worship and family gatherings in the Copper Basin, and the Town of Winkelman hosted the arrival of 3,000 people, mostly from the Tucson area, who marked the weekend by camping at Winkelman Flats on the Gila River.

Winkelman is the smallest incorporated town in Arizona, but somehow it manages to host this huge event each year. Much preparation and quite a bit of expense is involved, for the park has to be readied, portable toilets brought in, an increased police presence arranged, and the area cleaned up afterwards. A fee is charged to camp in the park to cover the increased services. The whole town is to be commended for encouraging this family event.

Kearny residents are asked to be prepared for the bulk pickup scheduled for Thursday, April 27. The town office asks everyone who wants to take advantage of this day to call RAD at 520-881-4227 to have questions answered and to arrange for items to be gathered up. Please do not call the town office, for it does not do the scheduling.

Everyone in the Copper Basin should consider attending the concert at the Ray Schools Auditorium featuring Jeff Scroggins and Colorado, one of the top bluegrass groups in the United States (and, for that matter, in the world). The group will perform beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 27 (really soon!).

The event is a benefit for the Art, Music, and Drama Departments of the school district (which is certainly a worthy cause). There are two ways to attend the concert: First, take your chances and simply show up at the box office that night or, second, reserve your place by going to the Ray Unified School District Facebook page to get a reservation coupon. Either way it’s cash only, but the reservation assures seating. Adults are $10, students $5, family passes $40, and children five and under are free. Don’t miss out!

The caring folks at Norm’s IGA in Kearny are billing their event Remission Celebration and Fund Raiser. It’s on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will feature bowling, a scavenger hunt, and drawings throughout the time. It’s to benefit Jaden, a nine-year-old boy who is dealing with leukemia. Let’s pitch in to enjoy ourselves and to help out.
