The Superior Chamber of Commerce has taken the opportunity to recognize many of the pioneering families of Superior, the families who have been in the community for generations, the families in which many of the local history and legends are told from. This year the Chamber board decided to recognize the Guzman Family during the 2017 Apache Leap Mining Festival
The Guzman family has spanned over six generations in Superior. The matriarch of the family Manuelita Guzman is buried at the Historic Pinal Cemetery and her decedents continue to devote much time and energy to the Historic Pinal Cemetery. She is buried in the same cemetery that the famed Mattie Blaylock Earp is buried just west of town.
Locals will recognize many members of the Guzman family who have been involved in the community over the years: Albo Guzman who is a longtime business owner in the community and most will never forget the love and generosity given by the late Manuel and Mary Guzman who gave their life to serve the Catholic Church and programs like Project Happy Face/Superior Food Bank. Manuel and Mary have several children and grandchildren who still continue to serve in the community today.

The Guzman family came to Superior for the opportunity to work in the Magma Mine. They originally started in Metcalf, Arizona. Metcalf was a community near Morenci/Clifton before the open pit mine was expanded. Albo Guzman’s father, Mike started Guzman Construction in 1941 and the company played a huge role in the development of Superior and the Copper Triangle area.
Several branches of the Guzman Family tree will be riding in the parade as the Grand Marshals this weekend. The family is looking forward to celebrating this recognition and enjoying the Apache Leap Mining Festival. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 18. Mila Besich is a resident of Superior with two children. She volunteers for many local organizations. She is an experienced fundraiser and event planner for Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition. She covers some of the area town councils and schools.
