Helping out The Chamber of Commerce with a half a dozen projects to beautify Superior.
February 25, 360 kids from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent the weekend at the facility that used to be the old high school. Rick Andreasen one of the leaders with the group says, “Our congregation is out of Queen Creek and once a year we do what is called a Youth Conference for a weekend just to give the kids some spiritual instructions and some good upbringing. Last year we stayed in Queen Creek, so this year we decided to come to Superior.”

The kids in the group ranged from 14 and 18 years old. As part of the Youth Conference the kids are asked to do some community service. For this conference three young men worked on the final projects they needed to become Eagle Scouts. Each future Eagle Scout was given a group of kids to command and assigned a task for their group. One group offered to help the Superior Chamber of Commerce, another cleaned up the desert in front of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and the last group made blankets.

Matthew Nevill, who is 16 years old, had 84 kids under his command. Matthew was working on Project Linus. Project Linus makes blankets for women’s shelters and hospitals. In Arizona, last year Project Linus created 4,000 blankets. Nationwide the organization made an impressive 100,000 blankets. The goal for Matthew’s group was to make 20 blankets and they ended up more than doubling that goal by making 49.

Fifteen-year-old David Allen’s commanded a group that walked along both sides of the old highway in front of Boyce Thomas Arboretum and picked up trash. David started in the scouts when he was 8 years old and he started down the path to become an Eagle Scout when he was just 11. He has worked hard on all the ranks and badges over the years and now that this last project is done, he just has to put in the paper work and he is an official Eagle Scout

Carter Broschinsky commanded a large group that rallied at the Chamber of Commerce. The group was broken into six smaller groups and given projects to help the chamber on its quest to beautify Superior. Charter is 16 years old and he says he feels fantastic to be done this final step in becoming an Eagle Scout, especially since his parents have a rule “wings before wheels.” Once he becomes an official Eagle Scout he gets his first car. Carter says being in the scouts, “I’ve learned how to lead people and I’ve learned all the skills I need to become a mature adult.” Carter has big plans for his future—one day he would like to run for President.
