Representatives from the U.S. Forestry Service Louis Sandoval, Linda Sullivan and Dean Whitney were on hand last week to talk to the kids in Mr. Runyons 4th grade class about their “Every Kid in the Park” program.
The Forest Service is trying to encourage the younger generation to get outside with their families and enjoy the federal lands. They talked to the kids about all the fun activities the kids can do on federal land and State parks such as hiking, camping, boating, fishing, sledding, cross country sledding. Each kid was giving a pass that allows them to get into a state park.
The kids then watched a video called “A Day in the Forest with Smokey The Bear”. The video taught the kids important tips for preventing forest fires and even gave them specific instructions on how to properly put out a camp site fire before you leave the campsite. At the end of the video Smokey the bear came out and visited with the children. All the kids were given bags full of Smokey the Bear material which included: the history of Smokey, pens and activity books.
