San Manuel Miners
The San Manuel baseball team picked up its first win of the 2017 season last Friday, defeating Santa Cruz Valley, 9 – 4.
The Miners, who suffered a loss in their season opener earlier last week, trailed the Dust Devils after three innings, 4 – 0. That’s when the offense came alive, scoring nine unanswered runs – four in the fifth and five more in the seventh.
Sophomore Kevin Carter doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Miners’ offensive attack, which benefitted from 11 stolen bases in the game.
Senior Antonio Gallego swiped three bases while Julian Rodriguez, Frankie Gonzalez and Alejandro Camacho each stole two bags.
Starting pitcher Josh Sharp threw 106 pitches during a six-inning outing. The senior allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts. Camacho allowed a hit and fanned two Dust Devils in an inning of relief.
