San Manuel Miners
When the San Manuel wrestling competes with a full squad, or close to it, many of the Miners end up on podium. When they have only five or six wrestlers at an event the results are not nearly as positive.
The former was true at the Coolidge Invitational, which took place Jan. 13-14, where five of eight Miners placed at one of the largest tournaments in the state. It was just the opposite four days later in Tombstone, where the Miners had only five wrestlers and came away with only one win, a 24 – 12 victory against Baboquivari.
At Coolidge, Franky Renteria, Max Fisher and Ruben Hernandez each went 6 – 1 with Renteria and Hernandez each placing second, and Fisher taking third. Daniel Garcia (6th) and Colbey Stratton (5th) also placed.
At Tombstone, Renteria and Fisher each finished 3 – 0 with Hernandez going 2 – 1. Illness and other issues left the Miners shorthanded at one of the last meets of the year before the state tournament begins next month.
The final division meet takes place on Wednesday in Benson and head coach Manny Yubeta is hopeful the Miners will travel with 10 wrestlers.
