Seventy (70) family members of O.C. and Helen Hing, pioneers of Superior, celebrated their life and contributions at the “Hing Family Reunion,” the weekend of Oct. 7-9, 2016.  In addition to family residing in Arizona, relatives traveled from Shanghai, Iceland, Macau, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon and California for the memorable weekend. The festivities took place in Superior, Mesa and Scottsdale.

O.C. and Helen Hing owned and operated Spring Garden Grocery and Save Money Market for over 50 years.  Save Money Market continues to be a family business currently owned and managed by Michael, Leroy, and Richard Hing, grandsons of O.C. and Helen and the sons of Ally and Jane Hing who live in Superior.

O.C. and Helen had 10 children. All attended Superior High School and all graduated from  universities in the fields of education, law, social work, business and finance. Offspring from the 10 children total 81 descendants. There are 37 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The highlight of the weekend was celebrating the 90th birthday

of Minnie, the second eldest child of O.C. and Helen. Minnie, graduated

from SHS in 1947. She currently lives in Pasadena, CA. Among the 70 in attendance to honor her were daughters, Donna Fong-Taylor, Joanne and Pauline Fong and grandsons Kyle and Jared Taylor as well as her surviving siblings.  Brothers and sisters included – Ally (class of 1947), Holy (class of 1949), Robert (class of 1951), Mary (class of 1956), Grace (class of 1958), Joyce (class of 1960) and Bill (class of 1967). Her oldest sister Lily (class of 1946) and younger brother Johnny (class of 1964) are deceased.

When Minnie was asked what her secret to such a long life was and what words of wisdom she has, her response was, “Do not worry about things you don’t have control over. Most important, trust in God.”  Her family admires her stamina and energy. She exercises regularly, is involved in the social activities at her retirement residence, works in the gift shop, and serves as a guide and mentor to new residents.

The weekend of reconnecting with family members was filled with questions about our heritage from the younger generation, sharing interesting stories including the history of Superior, fun & laughter, musical entertainment and good Chinese and Mexican food.

Everyone left the memorable weekend with hearts filled with gratitude and feeling truly blessed to be part of the Superior legacy of O.C. and Helen Hing.
