Superior Arizona –  The Head Start children and teaching staff were invited to tour the Superior Senior Citizens’ Center, on Wednesday, Oct.  26. There they interacted with the Superior Senior Citizens and joined them for a cheese pizza and apple juice snack.
The children sang several songs and listened as their teacher, Teresita, read ‘Nightmare in my Closet’, a story by Mercer Mayer. Afterward, the children held a parade, marching around the center with their parents and volunteers, dressed in their Silly Dress Up Day costumes.

They presented each senior citizen in attendance a bouquet of flowers that they crafted out of coffee filters and pipe cleaners, and dot print art.
Among the songs sung there was “Happy Birthday” directed to Paula Romero, a Senior Citizen’s employee who announced her retirement and  “Friends, Amigos” to welcome Carol as the new Superior Senior Citizens Director. The children clapped and wished Paula well as they sang to her.

Before they departed, as this was the perfect time of the year to empower the children to share, take turns and manage their feelings, the Superior Senior Citizens presented each child with a pumpkin, filled with pencils, a storybook, 100% juice, Kleenex tissue, hand sanitizer and pretzels. The children expressed their delight with a cheerful “Thank you!” for  the Superior Senior Citizens’ Center’s generosity.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, the Head Start students will be participating in a community art mural project. Then, on Tuesday, Nov. 29, they will be touring the Gemini Hospice Office and participating in a blood pressure reading as part of staying healthy.
On Tuesday, Dec. 6  the children will be touring Superior His & Her Hair. On Wednesday, Dec. 14 the children will be returning to the Superior Senior Citizen’s Center for a winter celebration of songs. The Thursday, Dec. 15 will be the last class day before their two week winter break.

The Superior Head Start staff is seeking volunteers who would like to enrich their community while making a positive difference in the life of the children.
