Make Recycling a Habit in Your Home

A friend of mine used to say, “When you do something, something happens.” This is at once true, meaningless, and profound. It’s in the great tradition of “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction,” as stated by Isaac Newton centuries ago.

And so it goes with recycling. We had a good system with the recycling centers back of the Pinal County building, but they were contaminated by people who dumped non-recyclables and, as a result, we lost the containers. We pleaded with Pinal County to give Kearny another chance. They relented and we received a new, large container for our use. But it has taken a while to get back into the habit of recycling. Not as many people are taking part, maybe because the old location was part of the “uptown swing” of going to the grocery store, picking up the mail, doing a little shopping, and maybe filling up the gas tank.

Consider making recycling intentional in your home. Check out all the things which can be recycled, including paper, plastics, aluminum and steel cans, and cardboard. Separate them as best you can (please use paper bags or boxes to contain items), and flatten all cardboard boxes so the container can be more efficiently used.

Consider, also, all the things you have which might be reused by others. Our Hand Me Up Shop is one place which could use these items. They sell them at low cost for use by others, and the proceeds gained benefit the town through scholarships for emergency workers, nurses, and for support of the medical clinic building.

Finally, there is one thing I ask you NOT to do. For years many of us have dumped dirt and concrete remains into the wash across from the Family Dollar store. This served a purpose for a while by stabilizing the bank of the wash. Now, however, it is interfering with the flow of the wash and causes rocks and mud to be deposited on Hartford Road. It could even to a dangerous level of blockage. Signs will soon be posted stating that dumping is not allowed.

Yeah, it’s really true. When you do something, something happens.
