The first of four regular visits each year by Eagle One, the mobile service and education center for all veterans, will take place Wednesday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The large vehicle will be in front of the Pinal County Courthouse providing information and assistance to all veterans. No appointment is need; just drop by and see what they have to offer… and they have much to offer!

Two big projects will take place in future weeks which will greatly benefit Kearny, and will probably provide a bit of inconvenience during construction.

We are happy that a contract has been issued for the replacement of approximately 18 of our 50-year-old fire hydrants. A Community Development Block Grant will cover the cost, and the project will be administered through Central Arizona Governments. We are exploring other grant possibilities to allow the contractor to replace even more hydrants, as money allows.

This includes full replacement of the hydrants and repair of curbs, walls, paving, landscaping, and infrastructure. In some instances the contractors will be replacing the hydrants in personal yards or in front of businesses, thus the need to do some repairs. The net result will be a safer community and possible reductions in the cost of insurance.

The town is also letting contracts for several paving projects, including Mountain View Road. This hilly road has deteriorated quite a bit, as those who live on the road can attest.

These projects will take considerable time. The hydrant project begins first, followed by the road project. The town and the contractors will work together to make road closures and detours as brief and inconvenient as possible.

The town’s budget for this next year is under discussion by the Town Council. This article is sometimes written before public notices are made of Town Council meetings, so keep a watchful eye out on the notice board for public meetings at our Post Office.

I hope you had a good 4th of July celebration. I’m thankful for our Volunteer Fire Department’s involvement in so many corporate events, and I’m glad we have such a good staff at our municipal swimming pool. The town is blessed with many businesses and individuals who like to help, and the corporate sponsorship of programs by ASARCO and Resolution Copper improve our quality of life. Let’s all work together to use our liberties wisely.
