Bigger than ever before and so much more to do, this year’s Apache Leap Mining Festival was very successful. Cupcake decorating, picture booths and public art projects were all added to the must do list of the events for kids and adults.
Saturday started off with the annual festival parade which was coordinated by Dolly Chavez. There were several entries this year. Earning the title of first place entry was Superior Dance Company; second place Jordan Lopez 2015 Fiesta Queen; and third place went to the VFW.
Winning the mining competition overall champion was longtime local miner Ron Hansen who was a crowd favorite at the event. In the individual competitions, the prizes were given out to first, second and third places. Sawing competition winners were: first place Josh Zapata; second place Rudy Dozal; and third place Ron Hansen. Spike driving winners were: first place Rudy Dozal; second place Ron Hansen; and third place Carlos Martinez Jr. The Mucking Team competition first place went to Josh Zapata and Adrian Armijo; second place Jake Martinez and Ray Ramirez; and third place Ron Hansen and Trent Smith. Drilling winners were first place Ron Hansen, second place Rudy Dozal and third place Carlos Martinez Jr.
Max the Chihuahua was the third time champion of the Chihuahua races. Second place went to Lilly and Lil Missy took third place in this canine competition where it was dog chase dog.
