The Legends of Superior Trail offers plenty of room to hike, bike or even ride horses.
Have you ever thought about taking a multi day-week backpacking adventure? Are you intrigued about the Arizona Trail but you don’t know where to start to even make those first few steps hiking on the trail? This Saturday, Feb. 13, the Legends of Superior Trails Fest will feature recent Yo-Yo hikers Rass and Kathy Vaughn who will be leading a discussion about their adventure and then will lead a two hour trail run on the Arizona Trail later in the afternoon. They will share their experience, their motivation and some humor about their recent adventure as they call them. The couple are the first yo-yo hikers on the Arizona Trail which means they have completed hiking both north and south bound on the Arizona Trail.
The event begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Superior Chamber of Commerce building at 165 Main St. in downtown Superior. All lectures will be hosted at the Superior Chamber of Commerce. The morning starts out with a series of informative talks including a history discussion on Pinal City and the archeology of the area, an update on the future plans of the LOST trail system and the always popular geology talk with ASU professor Steve Semkin. This year a new talk has been added by Rass and Kathy Vaughn who are the first Yo-Yo hikers or the Arizona Trail. They will share their adventures, what to expect for those considering a hike and also share about their personal journey on the trail. This is a can’t miss presentation.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be an outdoor expo featuring booths by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center and other outdoor activities with informational booths and there will be a hamburger and chile sale to benefit the Legends of Superior Trails Inc.
In the afternoon a series of guided hikes and walks will depart from Main St. to the trail heads. Hikes vary in length and intensity. There will be a hike to the Cross on Apache Leap, a hike to the Tunnel on the Canyon Segment of the LOST the geology walk and this year there are several activities on the Arizona Trail including a slow hike, a fast hike, a trail run and a mountain bike ride. Pre-registration for the hikes, walks and bike rides are requested to ensure enough guides are available you can register online at www.lostinsuperioraz.org.
