A yard of fun, a Superiorly spooky place

Superior, Arizona – When it comes to seasonal delights, we all know of special places we like to go, to see a special display of autumn foliage or a spectacular neighborhood decked out in Christmas decor. What is less known is where to go to get the daylights frightened out of you in celebration of All Hallows Eve, before the big day of Oct. 31 looms over our heads and the haunted houses are all manned. Or, is that ghouled? Monstered?

Whatever the case, one resident of the town of Superior has been setting out Halloween treats for the children, for over 30 years, right in her front yard, to enjoy throughout the month of October.

These are not mere toothsome bites of sticky sweetness, but, an autumn answer to the glorious, cutesy joys of winter lawn ornamentation. Laura Lopez on Sonora St. creates different scenes to display in her front yard for every night of October, unless it is raining.

She builds dozens of mechanical creatures to inhabit a spooky graveyard setting, complete with eerie noises and, yes, candy for the little ghouls and goblins that gather about.

Said Leslie Martin, Superior resident, “I was so impressed with her creativeness and all the work it takes every day to create a different theme in the yard that I had to contact you. Last night was horror dolls, tonight it will be creepy clowns. There will be a finale on Halloween.”

If you are in the mood to see a spectacle that will give you a little shiver down your spine, while warming your heart, nip on over to Laura’s place and check out the frightsome display made all for the joy of delighting and entertaining the younger members of the community.
