Copper Basin News
Last Friday’s football game versus visiting Superior turned out to be a double downer after the sixth-ranked Panthers steamrolled the Bearcats 54 – 8 on homecoming and took the Copper Helmet with them on the way out.
This will be the first in the last three seasons that the Copper Helmet will not reside in Kearny.
Statistically speaking, it was just an average game for the Panthers, who have won all five of their games in lopsided fashion. Superior entered last Friday’s game averaging almost 60 points per game and allowing only eight.
The Panthers held a 20 – 8 lead at halftime before scoring 34 unanswered points in the second half, including 28 points in the third quarter alone.
The Bearcats have lost all three home games so far this season and will have one last chance in its season finale versus Chandler Prep to avoid a winless home season. Their next two games are on the road, beginning this Friday at Arete Prep.
The Chargers, who are 0 – 5 so far this season, could be just what the doctor ordered for the Cats. Baboquivari ended its 68-game losing streak last week by defeating the Chargers, 54 – 40.
Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
