It may not count as far as the regular season is concerned, but the Lowry High School girls golf team earned some bragging rights over its eastern Nevada counterparts.
The Lady Bucks traveled to Spring Creek on Monday for the preseason icebreaker tournament with league rivals Elko and Spring Creek. It was the first time this year that the golfers were able to play a full 18 holes in one day.
Lowry took the top spot with a four-player total of 376 to beat Elko by five strokes. The Lady Bucks were led by freshman Tatyana Carlson, who shot an 81 to tie for low honors with Spring Creek’s Mikal Jerman.
“That was a great round for Tatyana.” said LHS head coach Todd Milton. “That is the best score she has ever shot.”
Elsie Rose and Brooklyn Backus shot 97 and 98, respectively, for the Lady Bucks and Savanna Cox carded a 100. Kaity Sample finished with a 109. Veronica Jones (110) and Hannah Havens carded a 129.
“I was very happy for the first time out.” Milton said. “Those first four scores were good. Veronica said that is the best round she has played and Hannah was out there for the first time.”
Lowry will be back on the road to eastern Nevada, as the regular season gets underway for the Division I-A North on Wednesday at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. The schools move over to Spring Creek on Thursday. The Lady Bucks will host the league on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Division I-A North doesn’t have regional championship and the top three teams based on the regular season standings advance to the state championships, which will be held Oct. 21-22 in Boulder City.
“Just watching them, there are things we need to work on.” Milton said. “The girls need to improve around the greens, especially our putting.There were a lot of three and four putts. A lot of that was the girls not taking their time. They would have a three-foot putt and hit it three feet past the hole. If we can fix that we will be OK. All in all, I was happy with what we did at the icebreaker.”
Tatyana is the granddaughter of Superior residents, Dora and Nacho “Mac” Villaverde.
