The Town of Kearny has been undergoing a series of changes with the local police department. One officer has been terminated, the interim chief remains on administrative leave pending investigation and another officer was arrested on domestic violence charges.
Many of the changes are sensitive in nature and some information can not be released to the public until all investigations are completed. To help local residents understand this process better there will be a meeting about Openess of Public Business and Transparency hosted by the Kearny Police Department. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at Constitution Hall.
Last week KPD Officer Mata was arrested in Tucson for domestic violence charges and stalking. He was arraigned and given a $7,500 bond. He is currently on administrative leave from his position with KPD pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
On Monday, Aug. 3, Officer Van Buskirk was terminated from his position at KPD. Due to privacy involving personnel matters the Town could not provide detailed information on why he was terminated from this position.
There is still an ongoing investigation on Interim Chief Richard Corso. The investigation is being conducted by the Department of Public Safety Special Investigation Unit.
DPS Sgt. David Blue is serving the position as police chief pending the outcome of the investigation of Chief Corso. He explained to the Copper Basin News that all three matters are separate and are not connected to each other. He encourages the public to attend the community meeting on public transparency.
Mila Besich is a resident of Superior with two children. She volunteers for many local organizations. She is an experienced fundraiser and event planner for Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition. She covers some of the area town councils and schools.
