Superior – After two weeks of a much enjoyed spring break, the students of Superior Head Start returned to the program this last Monday, March 23. The month before spring break was filled with projects, songs, stories, guest readers and visitors, and celebrations; all part of the learn by play approach.
In February, the students celebrated “Friendship Day/Valentine’s Day” with Superior Senior Citizens and were very thankful for all the treats. The month of March began with several discussions with the children, in the classroom and during outdoor play, about the importance of being “kind at home with their family and friends, school family and friends, and, being helpful. The Head Start children appeared to take their role seriously as they reviewed their classroom health and safety agreements, expressed kindness, gentle touches and empathy towards teaching staff and their school family.
The children had tons of fun enjoying successful game days. This activity has encouraged taking turns, good sportsmanship, responsibility, following directions, self esteem and independence.
The children also celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday during Read On activity, during the earlier part of March. In honor of the day, Ms. Villarverde’s high school class visited, to volunteer and read a variety of books. It was a wonderful learning opportunity for the Head Start Panthers to interact with Panther High School teens.
Now, it is almost time to go on their spring field trip to tour Roses Roses, where the children will also enjoy their spring lesson plan on planting seeds and watching them grow. They will also experiment by putting a white carnation flower in red and pink water to see what happens to the color of the flower, as part of their science activity; make bird feeders using peanut butter or cream cheese and bird seed ; jump like bunnies and measure how far each has jumped. The children will also, soon, begin working on their art projects to display in the community of Superior for the April Week of the Young Child.
“Throughout the year, we gather photos of our Head Start program in action.” said Teresita Olmos. Sounds like an invitation to come down and get involved.
