The San Pedro Valley hosted the District Governor Larry Palmer at their clubhouse in Mammoth Tuesday evening Dec. 9. Larry and his wife Ruth came from Chandler for the event which included a pot luck dinner, the reinstatement of returning members and the induction of several new members to the San Pedro Valley Lions. Town of Mammoth Mayor Don Jones and Justice of the Peace Arnold Estrada were also guests of the Lions.
District Governor Palmer spoke to the audience about the goals of the district and asked the San Pedro Valley Lions to help him achieve those goals:
• Increase district membership by 60.
• Charter one new club. There are currently 41 clubs in the district.
• Launch a college campus club.
• Increase women’s membership.
• Reduce the number of Lions that walk away (quit).
Governor Palmer also told the members about the build up for the upcoming Centennial in 2017. Lions International wants to do 100 million acts of service leading up to the Centennial. Governor Palmer spoke to the new members joining the San Pedro Valley Lions Club telling them that, “We are Lions because we want to provide help and support to those that can’t help themselves.”
The San Pedro Valley Lions are one of the few clubs in the state that own their own club building and the only one that owns their own shooting range. They do a lot for the community including supporting Little League, softball, a handicapped kid’s camp, sponsor a yearly eye medical unit, purchases eyeglasses and eye exams, provide two scholarships for high school seniors, provide school supplies for Mammoth Elementary students, and much more. They are helping sponsor the Electric Light Parade in Mammoth along with the Christmas stocking program for kids. Santa Claus will be coming to the San Pedro Valley Lions Club on Dec. 20 some time after 6 p.m. Look for him to arrive on a float in the parade.
