Luz Social Services, the Tucson based private, non-profit community development corporation recently recognized three residents of Superior at their thirtieth annual Hispanic Sports and Academic Enrichment Program awards ceremony. Superior High School Students Ariel Alonzo and Matthew Zavala were recognized for academic excellence and Max Magallanez was given a special recognition of Parent of the Year.
Ariel Alonzo recently graduated at the Salutatorian of the SHS class of 2014, she received the Isabel Garcia award. Garcia has been an ongoing leader in the immigration efforts. The award in her honor is only awarded to students with a GPA of 4.0 or higher. Alonzo has been accepted into the University of Arizona and will begin her freshman year in a few weeks. She is the daughter of Michael and Virginia Alonzo.
Matthew Zavala is a senior this year at SHS, he received the Joel Valdez Award. Valdez has been a national leader in public management and an advocate for Hispanic concerns. This award in his honor also is only awarded to male students with a GPA of 4.0 or higher. Zavala is an all around student and athlete at SHS. He is the son of Michael and Kathy Zavala.
Max Magallanez was awarded a special recognition given by Luz Social Services recognizing Parents of the Year in the various communities that Luz Social Services provides services to. Max Magallanez was recognized for his longstanding support and commitment to assisting with events hosted by the Superior Substance Abuse Coalition, he was also a wrestling coach for the Superior Unified School District for several years.
Luz Social Services has many programs that they facilitate throughout Tucson and the Copper Corridor. Luz has been in operation since 1971 and continues to develop programs that address issues such as high drop out rates, teen pregnancy prevention, alcohol, drug and tobacco use prevention, violence which can affect families in these communities.
Mila Besich is a resident of Superior with two children. She volunteers for many local organizations. She is an experienced fundraiser and event planner for Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition. She covers some of the area town councils and schools.
