The Town of Superior and Resolution Copper celebrated the official opening of the new playground and dog park at the US 60 Park.
The new playground equipment and dog park was funded through a community and economic development agreement between the Town of Superior and Resolution Copper. This agreement was formed as part of the community mitigations for the loss of the smelter stack that was torn down in November of 2018.
“We are grateful for the commitments made by Resolution Copper to help make these much needed quality of life improvements to our community,” said Mayor Mila Besich.
The construction bidding process was evaluated and conducted by the Town of Superior Youth Council. The young leaders learned how to read requests for proposals and choose a contractor based on the qualifications and manage the budget for the project. Their recommendations were then approved by the Superior Town Council.
“One of the best parts of this project process was involving our youth. They toured several parks in the East Valley and made decisions based on what they thought would be most enjoyed by the residents of Superior. We are all so proud of them. They are becoming strong leaders,” said Mayor Besich.
“We’re proud to collaborate with the Town of Superior to make improvements to the US Highway 60 Park and Caboose Visitor Center,” said Andrew Lye, Project Director of Resolution Copper. “Everyone involved, especially the youth council, did a great turning this park into a community asset. For years to come, residents and visitors alike will come to meet, relax, and learn about where Superior has been and where it is going.”
The new park features a play structure with a large tower and slides along with a merry go round and a smaller play structure for younger children. The playground was moved behind the caboose and the dog park was constructed where the old playground equipment was originally placed.
The brief ceremony included a few remarks from Mayor Besich and a ribbon cutting. Following the ceremony the park was open and the Superior Fire Department prepared hotdogs for those who attended the grand opening event.
