Last Friday, the Hayden football team competed at home against the number two team in the state, Williams.

Damien Smith (20) drives for a Hayden first down.

The first quarter started off with both teams loading the scoreboard with points. The Lobos were able to put up 14 points, but the Vikings nearly doubled that with 22 points. The rest of the game was a battle of catching up. During the second quarter, the Vikings began their point gap, ending it 16 points ahead of the Lobos. Hayden was able to shrink that gap during the third quarter, posting 18 points for that quarter, decreasing the score gap to a 6-point difference for the final quarter. The Lobos’ defense struggled to hold down the Vikings’ offense, allowing them to post 14 points in the final quarter. The Lobos’ offense pushed through and put 6 points on the board for the last quarter, resulting in a close loss with a final score of 44-58

“Much improved play from our team,” Commented head coach John Estrada. “It’s been a rough week playing numbers one and two in the state. We’re a little banged up, but I’m happy where we’re at. Williams was big and tough, (and) I’m proud of the way the boys performed. Our real season starts on Friday. We just need to work hard and believe in what our coaching staff is teaching. Hard work will get us there!”

Hayden is scheduled to play away at Lincoln Prep. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Ray will also be playing away this week. They are set to play Cicero Prep with kickoff at 7 p.m. Ray is coming from a week off after Baboquivari cancelled its season, leaving Ray with a bye week.
