
John Espino Chavez
John Espino Chavez, 87, of Superior, AZ, passed away on Nov. 18, 2024, in Mesa, AZ. Born Aug. 4, 1937, to Diego and Celia Espino Chavez in Cottonwood, AZ, John was the second of 12 siblings. The family moved to Superior when his father started working at the copper mine. Superior is where John met his cherished wife, Gloria.
After graduating from Superior High School in 1955, John worked at the Magma Mine Smelter, then went on to join the Armed Forces where he served for four years. After returning from service, he worked as a copper miner for 38 years before retiring. John was a pillar of strength and knowledge in the mining community to this day.
He was an avid outdoorsman, craftsman and collector of stones. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crafting wooden toys for his grandchildren, and renovating his house to give Gloria the home of her dreams. He often made others laugh with his humor and quick wit.
John will be remembered as a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Corral Chavez; and grandsons, Jerry Martinez and Troy Chavez. He is survived by his daughter, Rachel C. Martinez of Superior; son, John D. Chavez of Mesa; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Dec. 7, 2024, at 9 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Visitation is at 9 a.m. with the Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Military Honors will be held at 11:05 a.m. with a luncheon following at Los Hermanos Hall at noon.
