On the evening of July 31, 2024, the Superior Town Council unanimously appointed Joaquin Manuel as the new Police Chief. The appointment followed the announcement of Chief Tim Chavez’s departure from the department, driven by a family member’s illness, which left the Police Chief position open.

The selection process involved two internal candidates who were advanced to the final round, culminating in a special town council meeting. During this meeting, both candidates fielded questions from the Superior Town Council and engaged with town citizens. Following a thorough executive session, the council announced the appointment of Chief Joaquin Manuel.

Chief Manuel brings a wealth of experience from his extensive career with the Gila River Police Department. Starting in 1998, he served in various roles, including Officer, Detective, Internal Affairs, Corporal, Patrol Sergeant and SRO Sergeant, before his retirement in 2018. In 2019, Manuel rejoined the department as a Lieutenant, where he supervised the Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB) for three years. Under his leadership, he managed the Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit, Sex Crimes, Child Crimes, and General Crimes. Additionally, he oversaw the K9 Unit, Gang Unit, and Drug Unit.

Chief Manuel’s background is further distinguished by his service in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served our country. His extensive law enforcement experience and military background make him a highly qualified leader for the Superior Police Department. Notably, Chief Manuel is fluent in Spanish, which will greatly benefit our diverse community.

As Chief Chavez works with Chief Manuel over the next few weeks to ensure a smooth transition, the department and community look forward to a new era of leadership. The Superior community extends its gratitude to Chief Chavez for his service and dedication, and warmly welcomes Chief Manuel to his new role.
