Rebuild Superior Inc hosted the Fourth Annual State of the Town celebration on Thursday. The event is funded by many generous sponsors; their funding aids the organization in hosting the event which celebrates with an annual speech from Mayor Mila Besich.
The event this year included a red carpet walk of fame and photo booth. The evening began with a networking reception catered by Felicia’s Ice Cream shop in Besich Park. The VFW Color Guard presented the colors and Katelynn Commissaris led the Pledge of Allegiance. The event kicked off with a performance by Superior Dance Company.
Rebuild Superior, Executive Director Manny Guzman was the emcee for the evening. He presented two “Spirit of Superior Awards”, one award was given to Billy and Jenny Holmquist for their investments in downtown re-development and a second was presented to Angel Preciado for devoting her time and efforts serving as President of the Superior Food Bank.
Following the awards and entertainment Mayor Mila Besich gave her annual State of the Town speech. Her speech highlighted the history and impact of the movie industry in Superior as the baseline for her speech. She highlighted the major milestones and progress on projects including the new ambulance, completion of the helicopter pads at the airport, the recent signing of the Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) for the $2.5 million grant which will fund the pipelines for the Queen Creek Restoration project. She also shared that a new computer lab will be opening above the welding center at the Superior Enterprise Center. Besich also asked the voters of Superior to support Proposition 486 to keep the Pinal County road maintenance tax.
Besich gave a glimpse into work the Superior Town Council is doing for future planning, including the purchase of the 546 acres of Tonto National Forest which will create additional opportunities for housing and business development. She stressed the importance and need for high quality early childhood eduction with the loss of the Superior Headstart and she also announced her support for two school board candidates Martin Navarrette and Nick Cruz.
The evening concluded with a final performance from Superior Dance Company, performing a routine to a medley of Selena songs.
