Vince Majalca and the Wildcat wrestling team

Vince Majalca, former San Manuel assistant to Many Yubeta, has coached the University of Arizona wrestling team to its third Regional trophy in four years. The wildcats were runners-up in 2015, champions in 2016 and runners-up again this weekend.

The Wildcats finished with 92.5 points just defeating Dixie State by 5.5 points. Powerhouse BYU was uncatchable with 174.5 points. The Wildcats qualified seven wrestlers to the NCWA national championships in Allen, Texas March 7.

“We had a tough schedule this year,” said Coach Majalca, “We went to two NCAA’s and a Junior College tournament along with a team duel in Vegas.”

Six of the seven qualifiers are former Arizona high school wrestlers. They will now compete for All-American honors and a national title. The Wildcats will be the second seed from the west going into next week.

“We haven’t had an All-American in three years. I believe one or more of these men have what it takes to break the drought,” Majalca said.

The Wildcats are a club team, so they are not funded by the University. They have set up a gofundme page and you can find it on their Facebook page (University of Arizona Wrestling) or message coach Majalca at vincemajalca@hotmail.com for donations. The team needs to raise $2,000 dollars for travel expenses.
