Eleanor “Elly” Mary Barlow John

  Eleanor “Elly” Mary Barlow John passed away at her home in Sandy, Utah on Aug. 16, 2018, surrounded by loving family.

  Elly was born on Sept. 6, 1934, in Salt Lake City to Ora Haven Barlow and Hannah Melvira Barlow (née Higgs). She completed her Bachelor of Arts at Brigham Young University in Clothing and Textiles with a Minor in Art in June of 1957. One week later, on June 11, she married the love of her life, Edward Charles John, in the Salt Lake Temple.

  Her greatest joys came from raising their eight children and giving service to others. She will be remembered for the deep kindness of her heart, and the sincere effort she gave to truly loving all those around her. She held many positions of responsibility in the LDS church, including serving as president of the Relief Society, Young Women’s and Primary, impacting many lives through her example of devotion and the strength of her faith.

  From 1991 to 1992, Ed and Elly hosted Tania Nanavati, an exchange student from India, with whom they maintained a long friendship. After his retirement, Ed and Elly served together in the California Fresno Mission. She also enjoyed painting, bowling, camping, and sewing clothing and pillows for her family.

  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her oldest son, Lorin, and her oldest grandchild, Brian. She is survived by Lorin’s widow Julie, her children Keith (Gloria), Diana (Adam), Coleen (Steven), David, Glenn Oliver (Laura), Patrick (Kristine), Perry (Jamie), as well as 28 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

  Services were held Aug. 24 in Sandy, Utah. Interment followed at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
