
San Manuel’s Derek Anaya places third at William Bell Tournament.
Copper Corridor wrestlers continue to bring home some impressive hardware from tournaments throughout Southeast Arizona.
The Hayden High School wrestling team has been hard at work on the mat since the beginning of December, competing in a multi-meet with Globe and Alchesay on Dec. 3, and against Miami and Camp Verde on Dec. 10.
This past weekend the Lobo wrestlers traveled to Florence to compete in the Belva’s Real Estate Boys and Girls Invitational. The Lobos were able to bring home 9 medals.
Lady Lobo Ariana Arbizo brought home the first place medal for her weight-class. Julius Pinkard and Ben Quesada both returned home with second place medals in their respective weight classes.

On Dec. 5 and 6, the San Manuel High School wrestling team competed in the William Bell Memorial Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Pueblo High School. The wrestlers were able to get some matches in with some of the toughest schools in Tucson.
After missing the mark for her normal weight-class, Sienna Taylor bumped up to the 125lb class. Despite this, she was still able to claim a fourth place medal.
The wrestler of the week would be Derek Anaya at 157lbs, who claimed the third place medal.
“Derek had an amazing tournament beating three top-seeded wrestlers, defeating CDO in overtime, Mica Mtn by one point at the buzzard, and of all schools, Sunnyside by one point. Derek had an amazing tournament and is one of the most deserving wrestler of the week I’ve ever awarded,” commented coach Vince Majalca.
This past week the girls team competed in the Coolidge Jamboree, and the boys traveled to Bisbee for a multi-meet.
Both teams closed out their week competing in Florence at the Belva’s Real-Estate girls and boys Invitational. The team brought home 7 medals, three of them being champions: Jose Torres, Sienna Taylor, and Annie Nemons. More individual results will be in the next issue.
