Copper Corridor schools, Hayden, Ray, Superior, and San Manuel, competed in the 38th Annual Joe Padilla Baseball Tournament in Florence this past week. The four-day tournament began on Feb. 26 and concluded on March 1.
During the first day of the tournament, Hayden claimed an 8-0 win over Miami. Superior was victorious over San Tan Foothills, with a 10-0 final score. Ray went up against Florence, and suffered a 0-16 loss. The second day of the tournament saw San Manuel play their first game, where they also faced off against Florence, suffering a 1-6 loss. Hayden met up with Show Low, claiming a 6-3 win. Superior played against Safford, losing with a 1-11 final score. Ray went up against Thatcher, suffering another loss, with a 1-7 loss.
For day three, Hayden played Holbrook, claiming a 10-6 win. Superior met up with Morenci, where they won 7-1. Ray and San Manuel faced off against each other, and San Manuel claimed the win with a final score of 14-0. Ray also played against Santa Cruz Valley in the first round of the consolation bracket, resulting in a 3-8 loss. San Manuel met up with Wickenberg in the first round of the consolation bracket, winning 9-0.
Day four started the championship bracket, and continued the consolation bracket. Hayden met up with Superior, which resulted in a Lobo victory with a final score of 19-1. Hayden continued their quest to the championship game, but were shut down by Florence in the 0-3 game.
San Manuel faced off against Morenci during their second game of the consolation bracket. The Miners claimed the win with a close 2-1 final score. Making it into the consolation bracket championship game, San Manuel played against Santa Cruz Valley. Playing another close game, the Miners were able to best Santa Cruz Valley, and claim the win with a final score of 5-4, winning the consolation bracket.
