An unidentified 60-year-old man is dead in Winkelman after an officer-involved shooting Friday night.
According to a post on X, on July 18 at approximately 9:59 p.m., Pinal County Sheriff’s Office deputies were attempting to locate a wanted suspect in connection with a sex crimes against children investigation when the shooting occurred. PCSO said that the suspect refused commands, produced a handgun, chambered a round and took an offensive position towards deputies. The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Second Street in Winkelman.
The 60-year-old male was pronounced dead on scene by medical personnel. His name has been withheld pending next of kin notification. “We are actively attempting to identify the legal next of kin,” PCSO stated on X.
The sergeant who discharged his duty weapon was placed on paid administrative leave, per standard procedures, the post continued.
The case is under investigation. No other information was available at press time.
This is the second officer-involved shooting for Pinal County Sheriff’s Office in the space of two days. The first occurred in San Tan Valley on July 17 following a traffic stop.
