The Town of Superior has received a planning grant to design sidewalks on Panther Drive. The town is moving to the next phase to apply for funding of construction of the sidewalks.
Federal grant funding is often narrowly restricted, and only two streets in Superior are eligible: Main and Panther/Sunset. There is also guidance for what type of project is eligible. For this funding source, one of the few projects the town could apply for are sidewalks, which fit the criteria for safety improvement. The town has also applied for re-paving of Panther through a different funding source.
The proposed project is located along Panther Drive between US 60 and Sunset Drive. The work consists of constructing a new concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter on one side of the roadway. It also includes roadway excavation, removing a portion of the existing asphalt, sidewalk ramps, signing, pavement markings and other related work.
The proposed sidewalk will accommodate increasing travel demands resulting from the expected growth in population and employment. The sidewalk will provide a safe trip for pedestrians and cyclists to school, the playground, the swimming pool, grocery stores, the cemetery and residential homes. The project would increase the mobility and safety of the public. Sidewalks and bicycle lanes are integral parts of a town’s transportation system. The projects also meet the Goals of the Town’s transportation system to improve the mobility of people and goods, support economic development, and sustain public support for transportation planning and funding efforts.
The proposed sidewalk length is 6,000 LF, width is 6 feet wide with a 1.5-foot wide Concrete Curb & Gutter, and 11 ADA Ramps with crosswalk stripes at the road intersections. Miscellaneous drainage will be installed with Riprap rocks on a swale along the sidewalk.
