
Edward Martinez
Edward “Lalo” Martinez, 94, passed away from natural causes on Jan. 13, 2025, in Hayden.
Edward was preceded in death by his father, Juan Martinez; mother, Eusebia Martinez; sisters, Annie Pierson, Ramona (Monchie) Valdez and Mary Florez; brothers, Juan Martinez and Frank (Chico) Martinez; grandson, Angel Denogean; and great-granddaughters, Leanor Bravo and Alyssa Bravo.
Edward is survived by his loving wife, Sara; children, Aurelia Hise, Lorraine Denogean, Juan Martinez and Edward Martinez; grandchildren, Patricia Morales (Joe), Christina Smith (Tony), Doyle Hise (Lorraine), Eusebia Denogean (Manny Jr.), Juan Martinez (Priscilla), Melisha Evans (Matthew), Theresa Martinez, Sara Martinez, Jeanine Martinez (Brian), Edward Martinez (Angelica) and Adrianna Martinez (Jay); 33 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Genoveva (Beva) Lopez.
As a child, he worked at the Freeman Ranch, to help support his family. rounding up cattle and branding them for fifty cents a day. He knew every ranch in the area. He worked herding cattle, went on cattle drives, crossing the Gila River to the old train station in Winkelman, where the cattle was loaded onto railcars at the stockyard.
Edward served our country as a sailor in the Navy. He worked on the cranes that loaded the cargo ships. He also served as a policeman for the Town of Hayden, then Gila County Sheriff’s Office. He retired from his work at Kennecott Mine as a heavy equipment operator and from the Town of Winkelman. Edward was devoted to supporting his family and never stopped.
Edward loved spending time with his family. He taught his children how to ride and work with horses, how to rope, drive cattle, hunt, fish, and camp. Edward loved to dance with his loving wife, Sara. He was a great cowboy cook and passed many recipes on to his grandchildren.
Edward was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great-grandfather and friend. His legacy will live on in every story we tell. He lived a full and amazing life. He will truly be missed. Until we meet again.
Edward Martinez was buried in a private service on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden.
