Do you know who these girls are?
Copper Area News reader Bob Grassi was reading an article online about the history of color film when he came across this photo from the 1940s with the caption, “Little girls at Mammoth, Arizona, May 1940.”
“Some of these children might still be alive or might be recognized by younger relatives if the picture were published,” Bob said.
According to the article, “These photos were taken by Charles Weever Cushman (1896-1972), an amateur photographer and Indiana University alumnus, who bequeathed approximately 14,500 Kodachrome color slides to his alma mater.
“His photographs cover a 32-year period from 1938 to 1969, during which he extensively documented the United States as well as other countries.”
Bob, who no longer lives in the San Manuel area, worked as a school psychologist in the Mammoth-San Manuel School district from 1992 to 1999. After 1999, he continued counseling students in the district one day a week until 2015.
