Ofelia Urquijo passed away in her sleep at her home in Globe on Oct. 10, 2024, due to natural causes, at the tender age of 79.
She is survived by her son, Edward J Carrasco; daughters, April Carrasco and Crystal Carrasco; grandchildren, Jasmine Castellanos, Michael Paul Lira Jr., Kaya Rodriguez and Dylan Van Gorp; and great-grandchildren, Jose Jesus ( JJ ) and Julio Michael Castellanos. Some might say Ofelia is also survived by too many comadres and her beloved Superior.
Ofelia graduated from Superior High School. Although she did not serve in the military, she was there for her brother Mike Urquijo when he returned home from numerous tours of Vietnam and supported several events, when he was commander of the VFW post 3584.
A Jill of all trades, Ofelia was a hard worker. There was no job too big or too small that she wouldn’t attempt and complete. Ofelia worked as a receptionist for the optometrist in town; eventually retiring as a receptionist for the Superior Unified School District. Today adults in their 50s still remember Ofelia the bus driver, with love and admiration.
She loved to crochet and also knitted blankets, beanies, mittens and socks for the children. Ofelia took up and enjoyed journaling during the twilight years of her beautiful life. She had the spirit of adventure! There wasn’t anything Ofelia wouldn’t try and that included camping with just the ladies, no man in sight. Ofelia had a lot of compassion. There was never a hungry stray cat or kitten in the neighborhood. Ofelia greeted everyone as a friend. She did not know one stranger in town.
Ofelia will be missed here on earth, but with her passing, heaven, without a doubt, is a far better place now. Ofelia might be silent now, but that attention grabbing whistle of hers will continue to echo throughout the town.
All who knew Ofelia Urquijo please join us on Saturday, Dec. 7, for A Reflection of Life Memorial Service beginning at 11 a.m., with luncheon to follow, at VFW Post 3584, located at 405 W. Main St. in Superior.
