Dr. Nicholas J. Elkins, Pain Management, will be joining the Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center (CVRMC) team of physicians beginning Jan. 11.
Dr. Elkins received his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. He completed an internship in Chino, CA, followed by a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. At UT Southwestern, Dr. Elkins received the honor of resident researcher of the year award for his work with novel injection techniques aimed at treating arthritis of the spine at the North Texas V.A. Hospital. He completed his medical training with a fellowship in Pain Management at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Elkins is proficient in all areas of pain medicine, including spinal injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulators, sympathetic blocks, intrathecal delivery pumps and headaches. With his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation training, Dr. Elkins brings a unique perspective to pain management with an emphasis on regaining physical function and return to the activities that make life enjoyable.
Along with being trained in all pain medicine techniques and procedures, Dr. Elkins is also proficient in EMG testing and the treatment and management of stroke, brain injury, sports medicine, burns, spinal cord injury and many other neurologic and rheumatologic conditions.
Dr. Elkins is a fifth-generation Gila Valley (Safford/Thatcher area) native who is also fluent in Spanish. The goals of his medical training have always included returning to the Gila Valley. He has also extended his services to the rural communities of Cobre Valley.
